NBA 2K21 is officially out now, but I just got my entire review copy yesterday morning, so this inspection in progress will trickle into next week (following the Labor Day weekend). But I managed to put in a good number of hours yesterday, and in that time NBA 2K21 has made it clear that it has claimed the franchise's record of stellar on-court gameplay. Most of the updates are comparatively modest, like loose rebounds feeling and looking a lot more realistic, however they help add to an already solid foundation. Unfortunately, upgrades to the surrounding game modes seem pretty barebones.
The aim-meter mechanic is actually hard to grasp, but has already led to a really gratifying one-on-one isolation successes. It is nice being able to use the right stick exclusively as a sculpting tool till I'm ready to pull back to get a shot. The capability to size-up, which is tied to exceptional dribbling animations for lots of the top players in the league, and isolate is better than ever. I spent a few hours experimenting with various playstyles, like easing the pick-and-roll with Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. It's tremendously rewarding to use Doncic's dimensions and footwork to create space - something I could not replicate with other guards around the team, such as Seth Curry. While it's not entirely new, NBA 2K21's ability to emulate players' playstyles is outstanding this season.
Nevertheless, there are a couple annoying gameplay issues I have come across, too. Fastbreaks seem marginally improved, but participant spacing is still clearly off. For instance, even my finest three-point shooters will monitor within the three-point lineup on fast breaks when they'd be better off finding space in the corner. Generally, it feels like NBA 2K21 hasn't completely adapted to the emphasis modern NBA basketball has set on the three-point line.
