The RO membrane excludes contaminants based on their size and charge. Any contaminant with a molecular weight greater than 200 may be rejected by a properly functioning RO system (for comparison, the molecular weight of the water molecule is 18). Similarly, the greater the ionic charge of a contaminant, the less likely it is to pass through the RO membrane. For example, sodium ions have only one charge (monovalent) and are not repelled by the RO membrane and, for example, calcium with two charges.
