Pulisic's first goal of the new season came in somewhat chaotic fashion. Mason Mount's low cross from the right cannoned around the Crystal Palace penalty area before the No.10 lifted an instinctive shot high over a defender on the line, as the ball clipped the bottom of the crossbar on its way into goal. With Marcos Alonso having already netted a superb free kick earlier in the first half, Chelsea were well on their way to a win in their season opener.
A low drive from center back Trevor Chalobah on his Chelsea debut added further gloss to the score on a disappointing day for Palace and their new manager Patrick Vieira. His side did not manage to draw a save from Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy until after the hour while their opponents might have scored but just as he ended last season, Timo Werner began this one struggling at the tip of the attack.Pulisic, who had been left out of the starting XI for the UEFA Super Cup final and placed in an uncomfortable wing back role in preseason, was on impressive form for Thomas Tuchel's side throughout playing off the left of a front three. No player attempted more take-ons than the American, who also managed two shots on target in the first half.
With club record signing Romelu Lukaku set to join training on Monday ahead of next weekend's trip to Arsenal, Pulisic will have been acutely aware of the pressure on him to perform. Among Thomas Tuchel's options for the left wing berth that the 22 year old favors are Kai Havertz, Werner and Mount; the Chelsea squad is stacked with attacking talent and anything less than a very good performance will have players fighting for their place in the next match.
Pulisic certainly knows that the challenge is on to ensure he features regularly in Tuchel's plans. Speaking exclusively to CBS Sports earlier this week he said of his plans for the 2021-22 season: "I'm just looking to continue to grow as a player, obviously help the team in every way that I can and be a consistent starter, consistently playing. I want to make a big impact this year, in whatever way I can to help this team win."
