41-year-old had slipped under the train while trying to board the Indrayani Express at Dadar station; escapes with fractured ankle.

A 41-year-old woman, Vaishali Vaidh, slipped between the platform and the train while trying to board a moving train at Dadar station on Monday morning. Vaidh was trying to board the Mumbai-Pune Indrayani Express at 5.50 am when she fell in the gap. She has suffered fractures but is out of danger, thanks to the timely actions of Railway Protection Force (RPF) Subinspector Vineet Singh.

“When the Indrayani Express was entering Platform 4 at Dadar station, there was jostling to board the general coach of the train even before the train had come to a complete halt. During the jostling of passengers, Vaishali Vaidh, a resident of Dadar West, lost her grip and fell in the gap,” said Satish Menon, RPF in charge of Dadar.

It was difficult to reach her as there was a railing on the other side of the train and it would have taken a long time to reach her by crawling from the rear end of the train. Crawling from below the engine is also not feasible. A quick-thinking Singh then decided to jump over the railing to crawl under the coach to get to Vaidh, who could be heard wailing. Assistant inspector Ratan Singh and two constables also followed him.

Vaidh was then taken to Sion hospital at 6.25 am, with the help of Government Railway Police (GRP) officers.

Singh told Mirror, “At first we tried to pull her out from the platform side, but as the height of the platform has been raised, this was proving to be impossible. We didn’t have a lot of time and we could hear her crying. That’s when I decided to crawl under the coach from the other side, after jumping the railing.” After rescuing her, Singh sat with her beside the track, allowed the train to pass before bringing her to safety.

According to doctors at Sion Hospital, where Vaidh is being treated, she has suffered a fractured ankle and back injuries but is now stable.

KK Ashraf, senior divisional security commissioner of Central Railway, Mumbai Division, told Mirror that he would recommend Singh’s name for an award.
