this is how you get perfect soap bubbles

If you haven't blown bubbles through a ring while growing up, then you've definitely had an unconventional childhood. It's a lot of fun, until you notice a thin soapy film all over you from bursting all the bubbles.

Anyone who's tried blowing bubbles out of soapy water will know that there's always a learning curve to the process. Success rarely comes on the first few tries. But that's soon going to change.

Thanks to important "research" conducted at New York University, some of the smartest people on the planet have figured just the right recipe for blowing perfect bubbles every single time -- without any false starts.

In a paper from Physical Review Letters, mathematicians at New York University's Applied Math Lab have conducted numerous experiments with soapy thin films to tell us what it takes to create the perfect bubble, according to a report in Ars Technica.

bubble blowing down to an exact science

"We can now say exactly what wind speed is needed to push out the film and cause it to form a bubble, and how this speed depends on parameters like the size of the wand," said one of the co-author of the perfect bubble paper, Leif Ristroph.

You need a circular blow hole which is 1.5 inch wide, dip it in soap solution and blow air gently at 6.9 centimetre per second to get the perfect bubble.

Blow too fast and the bubble will burst. Change the shape of the blow hole and either bubbles will be smaller or not form at all.

Why are mathematicians wasting their time figuring out how to blow the perfect bubble, you wonder? That's because the learning from this experiment is applicable to other advanced industries, to improve processes concerning building better structure.
