Once Narad went to Vishnuji and asked who is your greatest bhakt right now, Vishnuji pointed out a farmer on earth. When Narad went to see that farmer, he observed nothing special. The farmer was not performing and rituals or sacrificing or doing any yagyas, etc.
Narad went back to Vishnuji and bewildered he asked,
"I do not understand how can be a ordinary farmer be your greatest bhakt?"
"Ordinary? Do do you think he was ordinary?"
"Yes! He did nothing of all things that your other bhakts are doing day and night."
"Okay! Do one thing. "
Vishnuji created a bowl which was fully filled with oil.
"Take this bowl and make a trip around the entire Universe taking care that not a single drop of oil spills down."
Narad did exactly as Vishnuji had instructed.
When the trip was completed, Vishnuji asked, "How was it?"
Narad replied with elation.
"I have completed the entire task as you had instructed. Not a single drop of oil spilled."
"Now, tell me Narad, what else had you observed in that farmer."
"He was like any other farmer. Woke up early, completed his morning routine, attended the cows, went to farm to work , came back took lunch and then again went to farm to work and then came back, ate dinner with family and then slept."
"And?"
"And what?"
"Did you observe him doing any kind of worship of mine?"
"No! He just took your name when he woke up, and before eating, before going to work, before sleeping or starting or ending anything."
"Now, tell me. How many times did you take my name when you were doing this bowl task."
Narad's expression changed.
"Oh! Not even once."
Narad understood and Vishnuji smiled.
Bhakti is giving up on the world and holding on to his holy feet but it is not about escaping. Bhakt does not give up on karma. He does everything but in his name. He surrenders himself. Even his actions and the results, he surrenders to HIM.
Bhakti is sublimation of his entire identity to HIM achieved through love like here in the world two lovers do.
